The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
